Ringstrasse is a five kilometre circular road that goes around the Innre Stadt district of Vienna, Austria. The beltway was built in the 19th century in the Ringstraßenstil style that was popular at the time and was intended to replace old city walls, which were viewed as a hindrance to traffic. The main purpose of Ringstrasse, however, was to showcase the city’s architecture, as many of the most amazing buildings in this capital city are located on this road. Now a major thoroughfare for cars and pedestrians, the road has become one of the main attractions of the city.
- Cruise past the Vienna Parliament Building, a beautiful neo-attic structure complete with austere columns and a collection of intricately designed fountains outside.
- Watch a beautiful opera performance at the Vienna State Opera. Located on the Ringstrasse, it is housed in a neo-romantic building that regularly features some of the best opera singers in the world.
- Learn about the rich history of art in Vienna at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the main art history museum of the city and one of the cultural hubs of the city.
Since Ringstrasse literally goes around the Old Town of Vienna it is very easy to reach using public transportation or simply walking. One of the best ways to see the city is to hire a bike from one of the bike hire services and explore the more than 700 kilometres of bike paths that snake through Vienna. The tram is also a popular option and there are several stops along Ringstrasse where you can get off to admire the historic buildings more closely. People using public transportation for several days can buy a flat fare ticket.
