Penzing is the name of Vienna’s 14th district, which can be found at the Western border of the city. The district is mostly associated with Otto Wagner, the most famous Austrian architect of the Belle Epoque era. His magnificent Art Nouveau buildings are scattered all over Penzing and show most impressively that also the more remote parts of Austria’s capital have got a lot to offer. The district is a must for everyone who is interested in architecture from all epochs – besides Art Nouveau, you will find Baroque, Secession Style, and Gothic Revival architecture there.
- View Otto Wagner’s three most famous Art Nouveau-style buildings: His two villas in Hüttelbergstraße 26 and 28, as well as Vienna’s Kirche am Steinhof on Baumgartner Höhe, in Penzing.
- Explore the villa at Hütteldorfstraße 26, where you will find a museum in honour of Ernst Fuchs, an outstanding artist of the 20th century and the founder of the impressive Vienna School of Phantastic Realism.
- Escape the hustle and bustle of Penzing for Wienerwald, the northern stretch of Austria’s Limestone Alps, with its extensive forests.
Scenic Penzing is situated on the outskirts of the city and therefore not serviced by the underground. However, the Westbahn train line, which links Vienna to cities Linz and Salzburg, runs right through this must-visit district, making it rather simple to reach. At the terminal stop of U4, you can conveniently change to trains. As opposed to the hectic city centre, where cars are a hindrance, here you may also consider driving. The motorway, named Westautobahn, links Vienna to Salzburg and Linz. Penzing has its own exit named Wien Auhof.
