Vienna’s Nationalbibliothek in the first district is clearly the most important library in all of Austria. Anything you want to know about Austrian literature you will without a doubt find here. But Nationalbibliothek offers more than just an abundance of books; it is a myriad of different museums and archives, such as the Globe Museum, Papyrus Museum, Esperanto Museum, Bildarchiv, Literary Archive, Music Collection, and Cartography Collection, to name just a few. Apart from that, architecture of the Nationalbibliothek itself will give you a first taste of Austria’s imperial history.
- Tour the Baroque Grand Hall, which is situated on the first floor of Nationalbibliothek in Vienna, and which makes it one of the most beautiful historic libraries in the world.
- The collection of papyri that can be found within the walls of Vienna’s Nationalbibliothek is one of the greatest worldwide, consisting of more than 180,000 exhibits from the 15th century BC to the 13th century AD.
- Be sure to look for some of the more than two million pictures and photographs in the Bildarchiv, remarkable collection was started by Emperor Franz I, that impressively document Austrian history.
It is easiest to get around Vienna by underground. Take the U3 to Volkstheatre or Herrengasse, or the U1 or U4 to Karlsplatz. The 1, 2, or D tramline can be taken to Burgring or Dr. Karl Renner-Ring, or the Number 2A bus to Heldenplatz. The National Library, including its various museums as well as the Grand Hall, is open daily except for holidays. Whilst Nationalbibliothek itself can be visited for free, the various museums attached to it request only a surprisingly low fee. Also, the available tours are rather good value and there is no charge for children.
