Mariahilferstrasse is a large and very popular shopping street situated in the inner city of Vienna, Austria. Mariahilferstrasse is more than just a collection of stores, as the street also contains some of the most interesting historic buildings in the city, making it one of Vienna’s top attractions. Mariahilferstrasse became an important road in 1663 and it slowly evolved from a rural region to a suburb where artisans and traders settled. Now Mariahilferstrasse it one of the most important streets in Vienna, not only for commercial purposes but also because of the large collection of museums and churches.
- Shop for clothing in the popular Herzmansky department store, one of the flagship retailers on Mariahilferstrasse where you will find some of the top designers in Vienna.
- Climb to the top of the stairs at the Rahlstiege building on Mariahilferstrasse and you will encounter the Goose Girl Fountain, a sculpture by Anton Paul Wagner that is one of the most popular in Vienna.
- Marvel at the Mariahilferkirche, a beautiful 17th century church on Mariahilferstrasse that has an ornately designed façade with two iconic spires.
Vienna has an efficient public transportation that makes it easy to get to and around Mariahilferstrasse without the use of a car. The easiest way to get there is to take the tram that runs nearly the entire length of Mariahilferstrasse. You can just get off at any stop you like and walk to nearby attractions. There is also a station of the underground U3 line at inner Mariahilferstrasse that is just a short walk from many of the biggest retailers. The best way to see the area is on foot, so that you can enjoy the architecture up-close.
