Whilst the cafes and museums of Vienna’s city centre are undoubtedly gorgeous, after a while they can make you a little suspicious. Eventually, you’ll start thinking that this place can’t be all beauty and charm — that there must be grittier, poorer neighbourhoods hidden away, which prove the city’s studied, nearly impossible perfection is a lie. Margareten — Vienna’s largely working-class fifth district — shows that whilst you are right about the city having grittier urban areas, these areas possess a beauty and charm of their own. Come over to see what this city is like when it’s not being watched.
- Wander around and photograph Margareten’s fascinating urban landscape, before engaging with Vienna’s locals and buying some delicious pide from the many local Turkish groceries.
- Go to the “Haas Biesel,” a beloved local haunt, order some traditional Austrian pub grub and beer or wine, and chat with the regulars.
- Catch an art-house flick at Margareten’s character-filled “Filmcasino” (schedule available here: http://www.filmcasino.at/) and order a meal at one of the sophisticated restaurants at the Castle Square (the “Silver Host” serves traditional Vienna-style cuisine).
The best and most convenient way to access Margareten from the centre of Vienna is usually through public transport. Catch the U-Bahn 4, the Southern railway lines S1, S2, and S3, and the tramlines 6, 18, 62, and 65. Travel by public transport usually costs two Euros after 9am and takes around 20 minutes. To help plan your journey, go to http://www.wien.gv.at/english/transportation-urbanplanning/timetables/index.html. Active people will be able to hike from the Vienna city centre to Margareten in about 40 minutes, and those with a car can navigate through city traffic in about 10 minutes.
