Fans of unique architecture should pay a visit to the Majolikahaus apartment complex in Vienna, Austria. Situated close to the popular Naschmarkt, the historic building was designed by renowned Austrian architect Otto Wagner in the late 19th century in the Secession style. Secessionism has much in common with the Art Nouveau movement found in other countries and has a revolutionary, enlightened spirit. The exterior of the Majolikahaus is covered in a colourful floral design that seemingly flows upwards, becoming richer and denser towards the top. Not a big hit at first, the building has since gained popularity.
- Get a close-up look at the façade of the Majolikahaus to see the unique majolica tiles that form its distinctive flower pattern and are among the most durable and easily maintained building materials.
- Check out the shops that line the first level of the apartment complex, or head nearby to one of Vienna’s most popular markets, Naschmarkt, to indulge in gastronomic delights from over 100 stands.
- Walk over to the Haus des Meeres, which is a large aquarium housed inside a former flack tower used during the war and where visitors can see a shark tank.
