Liechtenstein Palace hotels
The most eclectic and controversial building in all of Vienna, the Liechtenstein Palace has had a most eventful history. The construction of the Baroque staircase led to a dispute between the owner Johann Adam von Liechtenstein and the architect Domenico Martelli. During the last days of World War II, most of the roof and a great portion of the upstairs ballroom was destroyed in a plane crash. Reconstruction could not be afforded until 1974. The Liechtenstein Palace is currently being renovated and will be open to visitors in all its original beauty in the spring of 2013.
- Built in 1691 as the first building in Vienna in the Baroque style, the Liechtenstein Palace was renovated between 1836 and 1847 in the Rococo style and thus displays an eclectic mix.
- The Liechtenstein Palace boasts the most outstanding Baroque staircase in all of Vienna, which actually led to quite a bit of controversy.
- The most expensive item of furniture in the entire world can be viewed there: The Badminton Cabinet, built in 1726 by the Medici, and sold to Hans Adam II. von Liechtenstein in 2004 for about € 25,000,000.
The Liechtenstein Palace can be found in the ninth district. The easiest way of getting around Vienna is by underground. From the U4 stop Rossauer Lände, it is a 300-metre walk. Alternatively, you can take the tramline D to Bauernfeldplatz. The Palace is open for guided tours from Monday to Friday from 9a.m. to 5:30p.m. Note that you have to register for these tours at firstname.lastname@example.org. (Check www.palaisliechtenstein.com to find out tour dates.) A tour costs € 20 per person. You can also book private tours for € 500 for up to 25 people.
