On the eastern side of the Danube Canal in Vienna lies the second district of Leopoldstadt, a short subway ride from the first district of Innere Stadt. “Matzo Island,” as Leopoldstadt is commonly referred to due to its Jewish population, survived the World War II air strikes because it was protected by two large concrete Flak Towers built by the Nazis. Now, visitors can enjoy the delicious Kosher Restaurants and can venture to the Prater region to enjoy its Ferris wheel called the "Wiener Riesenrad.” Visitors and locals alike have riding this fun attraction since 1897.
- Wander down the Augarten, a classic Baroque park, and check out the building where the world-renowned Vienna Boys Choir practises.
- For the more active traveller, try jogging with the locals alongside the Heustadelwasser ("hay barn water") in Vienna – a branch of the Danube cut off from the main river centuries ago and part of the former Habsburg hunting grounds.
- Act like a Leopolstadt local and take a chance at the two horse racecourses, Trabrennbahn Krieau (meaning “War Floodplains”) and the Galopprennbahn Freudenau.
It is easy to navigate through the districts of Vienna, and the easiest way to get to Leopolstadt is via the U-Bahn. Purchase a ticket from the “tabac-trafiks” (stands selling newspapers and tobacco) for 1.70€ ($2.15 AUD) and take the U1 line to the Praterstern stop. From here, walk down the tree lined streets and walkways and arrive in the Prater region to the north or the Augarten to the south. Buses and trams also go to the second district. Once you arrive in Leopoldstadt, you can easily walk to all of the nearby attractions.
