The Kapuzinergruft in Vienna, which is sometimes referred to as the Kaisergruft (Imperial Crypt), is one of the most visited sights in the entire city. It has served as the primary burial place for members of the Imperial Habsburg family since 1633, with the latest addition being the Archduke Otto, who was buried here in 2011. He was the last claimant to the Hapsburg thrones, although he renounced them in 1961. The Kapuzinergruft is located below the Capuchin Church and continues to be maintained by over a dozen Capuchin friars.
- Check out the pompous yet intriguing double sarcophagus that is the final resting place for the powerful Empress Maria Theresa and her Holy Roman Emperor husband, Franz Stephan.
- Enjoy a spooky moment when you look at the ornamental crowned death head that decorates the Emperor Charles VI sarcophagus, one of the most chilling sights in Vienna and the most visited burial site in the Kapuzinergruft.
- Take a journey through Vienna’s history as you walk through each of the different chambers in this fascinating crypt.
The Kapuzinergruft resides underneath the Capuchin Church on the Tegetthofstrasse, which is in the old centre of Vienna. The best way to get around the city is by using the underground subway and trams, although the buses are also helpful if your hotel is in an outer district. The underground station closest to the Kapuzinergruft is at Stephansplatz, which links to every line. From here, it is a short 400-metre walk. The crypt is open every day of the week, from 10 AM to 6 PM, and will cost no more € 5 per person.
