Dating back to the medieval period, the Judenplatz is a memorial area in Vienna’s old Jewish quarter. Historically, it was an important district of education and commerce and created a distinctive cultural topography within the city. The pogrom of 1421 and the Holocaust of the Second World War devastated the people and this district, and it stands today as an icon of Austria’s history. In addition to the memorials, the Judenplatz is home to a significant archaeological site. As a poignant place of remembrance and discovery, visiting this district is key to understanding Austria’s complex history.
- Visit the 15th-century remains of the Judenplatz synagogue, destroyed during the medieval Viennese reign of terror, and step into a reconstruction of Jewish Vienna at the time.
- Pause at the Holocaust Memorial, also known as the Nameless Library, which stands in stark contrast to Vienna’s Baroque architecture with its symbolic, military-inspired bookshelves.
- Discover the bronze statue of German poet Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, who advocated religious tolerance during the Enlightenment era, at the Lessing Monument and then admire the sculptures of the Cardinal virtues over the gates of the Bohemian Court Chancellery.
The Judenplatz is located in the heart of Vienna, on the historic location of the medieval Jewish settlement. You can easily walk to it from the museum district around Volksgarten. There are two convenient subway stations to the south of the plaza. The U1 and U3 subway lines stop at Stephansplatz to the southeast of the plaza. If you are on the U3, you can get off at the adjacent stop, Herrengasse, which is directly between the Theseus Temple and the Judenplatz. Buses 1A and 3A stop right at the corner of the plaza.
