Hofburg Imperial Palace
From the thirteenth right until the beginning of the twentieth century, the Hofburg Imperial Palace was the residence of the Habsburgs in Vienna. The Imperial apartment, the museum concerned with Empress Elisabeth (Sisi Museum), and the silver chamber are the most visited sites in all of Austrian history. You simply cannot get a feel for Vienna and Austria’s grand history without having seen Hofburg Imperial Palace. And while you’re there, you may consider visiting the world famous Spanish Riding School with its renowned Lipizzan ballet performances.
- 2012 marks the 175th anniversary of the Empress Elisabeth’s birth – an evening celebration around the palace through the Heldenplatz courtyards would be an excellent choice.
- Experience a classical concert in the magnificent and fitting style that only Vienna can provide – you may not be able to get tickets for the world famous New Year’s concert, but there are plenty other opportunities to see the Vienna Hofburg Orchestra.
- Don’t miss the varying events at Hofburg Imperial Palace in Old Vienna, such as annual exhibits at the Kunsthistorisches art museum.
It is easiest to get around Vienna by subway, with Stephansplatz being the main changing point. Take the U3 to Herrengasse and Hofburg Imperial Palace will merely be down the road. The imperial apartments are open to visit every day between 9am and 5.30pm. English tours take place daily at 2pm. Groups are required to pre-book, so be sure to research all necessary steps before making a visit. A ticket that includes attendance of a guided tour costs €13 for adults and €7.50 for children.
