The 17th district of Vienna, Hernals, stretches from close to centre of the city out towards the north-west. The district became a part of Vienna in 1892 and is known to be quite densely populated, with blocks of stately residential buildings lining the avenues. Hernals is relatively quiet during the day and offer vineyards and heurige, or wine taverns, serving local wine closer to its outskirts. Once a fledgling theatre district, many theatres have opened and close their doors here, although a couple remain. There are several green spaces to enjoy in the area.
- Be sure to take a tour of the spectacular, Baroque cathedral Kalvarienbergkirche located in this Vienna district, which is a 13th-century place of worship visited by composer Franz Schubert on occasion.
- Pay a visit to the Baroque palace Schloss Neuwaldegg and its English garden or head to nearby Schwarzenbergpark to enjoy hiking and picnicking in this expansive Vienna park.
- Take in a cabaret show or musical performance at the Metropol Theatre in Hernals for a night of memorable live entertainment provided by talented local performers.
