The fabulous Gasometers of Vienna are a spectacular example of innovative development. Redundant since 1984, these four structures, each over 75 metres high in the Simmering district of the Austrian capital, were converted in 2001. They each now have three levels offering a mix of shopping, entertainment, restaurants, flats, offices, an events hall with a capacity of 3,500, a 12 screen cinema, and even a school. Sky-bridges connect the four former gas tanks, which are referred to simply as A, B, C, and D. They really do look incredible and are a credit to the designers and the city planners.
- Book yourself a ticket to watch a local, or even a top international, act perform at the hugely impressive concert hall built within the converted Gasometers in Vienna.
- Marvel at the terrific views attainable from the sky-walk internal bridge connecting the C and D Gasometers in the Austrian capital.
- Take a guided tour through each Gasometer and learn all there is to know about the transformation of these remarkable structures, seeing first-hand everything they have to offer and how they have given Vienna a world famous landmark.
Take the underground system of Vienna and catch the U-Bahn Orange U3 line to the Gasometers on a journey that takes around eight minutes. It starts from Stephansplatz, the most central station, and heads eastwards. Get out at station Gasometer. Bus number 72A will transport you to the Gasometers during the day, whilst N75 will take care of you at night. By road coming into the city, take the Highway A23 Südosttangente and look to exit at St Marx. There is also always the taxi option, although that will be the most expensive choice.
