Funeral Museum Vienna
Death has long been big business in Vienna, with generations of Viennese citizens saving up for swanky send-offs with that same fevered devotion used by American girls when creating hope chests. As such, producing elegant and bizarre funereal amenities has always been both an industry and an art form—and an intriguing one at that—as you’ll discover during your trip to the one-and-only Vienna Funeral Museum. Sure, there’s something distinctly unusual about a museum that invites visitors of all ages to pose in a coffin, but it just shows how morbidly fascinating and fun the museum makes this taboo subject.
- Wander the Vienna Funeral Museum’s one thousand exhibits, from the stately horse-drawn coaches and pretty coffin cloths, to the football-shaped urn.
- See the Vienna Funeral Museum’s own eighteenth century reusable coffin, which wasdesigned with a trap underneath so the coffin could be easily emptied for reuse.
- Learn about all the precautions that Viennese people have taken to prevent premature burial, from coffins with bells installed and corpse-stabbing knives, to the more recent doctor-administered lethal injection for the already deceased.
The Vienna Funeral Museum’s address is Goldeggasse 19, and it is located seven-minutes, by car, from the city centre. If you prefer public transport, take the U1 towards Reumannplatz from Karlsplatz or Stephansplatz Stations, and get off at Südtiroler Platz Station. You can also catch Bus 13A from the city centre to Südtiroler Platz, or Kolschitzkygasse. Once you have arrived at either of these stops, walk east down Shelleingasse until you get to Argentinierstrasse, then turn left, walk until you reach Goldeggasse, turn right, and keep going until you get to the museum. This brief little hike should take only one minute.
