As the 21st district of Vienna, Austria, Floridsdorf is one of two city districts situated beyond the Danube River. For most of history, the monastery of Klosterneuberg owned the area that now makes up this district. Quiet and almost suburban, Floridsdorf is on the northern edge of Vienna, and features a number of quirky museums, including one focusing on saddles and another devoted to fishing and fisheries. The more mainstream District Museum explores the development of the left side of the Danube River. Floridsdorf is ideal for visitors who want a quieter, urban environment.
- Learn more about Floridsdorf’s development at the District Museum, which details the beginning of steam navigation, railways and the history of old Vienna locations north of the Danube River.
- Relive Vienna during the 19th century in the Beethoven Memorial, also called Eroica House, which is the building where Beethoven worked on (but did not finish) his groundbreaking third symphony.
- Feed your spiritual life in the Pfarrkirche Donaufeld, often called the Cathedral of Lower Austria, which has a unique interior and a 1910 Swoboda organ, which has 1,940 pipes.
The 21st district of Floridsdorf is not far from Vienna’s city centre, but there are not many public transportation options to get here. This area is easiest to get to with a rental car or taxi. Rental car offices are prevalent throughout the city, as well as the airport. Once in Floridsdorf, tourists can walk to many attractions. Visitors coming from outside the area can fly into the Vienna-Schwechat Airport and take the City Airport Train into Vienna. Travellers from neighbouring countries also have the option of taking a high-speed train into the city.
