Each Flakturm, or “Flack Tower,” that can be seen in Vienna serves as a reminder of the Austrian city’s role during World War II. Altogether, there are six of these towers made from armoured concrete. They were erected between 1942 and 1945 along the city’s outskirts in order to defend the city and protect its citizens against the United Kingdom’s increasingly frequent air raids. The Flakturm form a triangle with St Stephen’s Cathedral in the centre, and their fairly indestructible walls provided shelter for the city’s population as well as housed provisional military hospitals and radio stations.
- Head to Vienna’s Arenbergpark to visit the Flakturm VIII G-Tower, which houses the MAK Collection of Contemporary Art and is adjacent to a pretty park with a grassy lawn, trees, and benches.
- See aquatic animals and other creatures at the Haus des Meeres Aqua Terra Zoo in the flak tower in Esterhazypark, which has one of the country’s largest shark tanks and free-roaming animals in the Tropical House.
- Head outside the Esterhazypark flak tower to find one of the tallest climbing walls in Austria, which offers excellent views of Vienna at the top.
It is easiest to get around Vienna by public transport. In order to get to Arenbergpark from the city centre, visitors can take U3 and change to the bus line 4A at the Rochusgasse stop and get off at Ziehrerplatz. Esterhazypark is a bit closer to the city centre, and the U3 will take visitors there directly. The station where to disembark is Neubaugasse. The climbing wall is in use from Monday to Friday during the summer months, and a two-hour ticket costs €7 for children and €12 for adults. Climbing routes for children are also provided.
