Clock Museum hotels
Have you ever heard several thousand clocks chime at once? No? Then you must visit Vienna’s Clock Museum at a full hour. Known locally as the Uhrenmuseum, it is situated in Palais Obizzi, which was built in 1690 in the baroque style and later converted to accommodate the famous Austrian author Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach’s strange and magnificent collection of clocks. In nineteen rooms crammed with fascinating exhibits, you can find clocks in all shapes, styles, and sizes. Learn about how clock “fashions” changed through the centuries and, besides that, view a most remarkable collection of watches.
- Vienna’s Clock Museum is the most outstanding museum of its kind, displaying more than3,000 extraordinary clocks from the fifteenth century onwards, which are still working today.
- Every exhibit has its own appeal—it can be big and heavy (like the clock formerly on Vienna’s Cathedral), smaller than a thimble (like the ‘Zappler’), or have a unique history: one lock belonged to Emperor Franz Josef.
- Be sure to see David a Sancto Cajetano’s astronomical clock from the 18th century, which shows the orbits of the planets of the solar system.
The Clock Museum can be found at Schulhof 2, which is in Vienna’s Old Town. One of the closest subway stop is Stephansplatz, so it is right in the city centre. The subway lines U1 and U3 will stop here and a five-minute walk will take you to the Clock Museum. Admittance is free for everyone under 19 and it’s just €6 for adults, apart from every first Sunday of the month, when everyone may visit for free. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday between 10am and 6pm. Clock’s ticking!
