Hoher Markt is the oldest square in Vienna, Austria and is home to the Ankeruhr, or Anchor Clock, an usual Art Nouveau timepiece with designs by Franz von Matsch between 1911 and 1917. Sitting high atop the square, the clock dominates this historic area that was once the scene of executions and other punishments and a key centre for the textile trade. When the Ankeruhr strikes the hour, spectators are treated to the sight of famous Viennese figures parading out from the inner workings accompanied by music. The Hoher Markt is also home to museums and cafes.
- Visit Viena’s Ankeruhr at noon, the only time of the day when all of the notable historical figures appear in the parade, including the famous Joseph Haydn, Empress Maria Theresa, Walther von der Vogelweide, and Prince Eugen of Savoya.
- Check out the Roman Museum at the Hoher Markt to understand what life was like in the Roman military camp that was once here in ancient times.
- Take a scenic horse-drawn carriage ride through Hoher Markt and to Vienna’s most famous attractions in a relaxing and effortless manner.
With the Ankeruhr located in Vienna’s famous Hoher Markt, taking public transport to the area is quite easy, especially since Vienna has an extensive public transport system. Vienna can be accessed by rail and air. The Vienna International Airport receives flights from all over the world, and the Austrian Federal Railways offers extensive domestic routes and connections to international service.
