Monkey Mia General Information

While the vibrant city of Perth and gorgeous Margaret River Wine Region get a lot of love, Western Australia unfurls a spate of wonders beyond the seductive southwest corner of the spectacular state. Shark Bay, for one, is nonpareil, with 1,500 km of exceptional coastline to explore, unimaginable scenery and rare biodiversity.

Australia is no stranger to natural UNESCO World Heritage Sites and indeed, is somewhat of a poster child in the department. From the Great Barrier Reef to Kakadu National Park, the Lord Howe Island Group to the Wet Tropics of Queensland, the country is is enviably blessed. Shark Bay however, has to rank as one of the most unusual and extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage Sites not only in Australia but perhaps even, the planet. The small tourist resort of Monkey Mia, some 800 km north of Perth, provides supreme access to Shark Bay’s treasures, from ample sea-grass pastures teeming with grazing dugongs to pods of inquisitive bottlenose dolphins. At over 23,000 km2, the World Heritage Site is colossal, which is precisely why so many visitors choose to stay in Monkey Mia for a spell. As a rule, most take the long road trip from Perth or fly in to Shark Bay Airport, some 16 km from the resort.
