Really noisy

This looked like good value online. The location was convenient to Southern Cross Station and thought I'd save some money by booking a room with a shared bathroom. The room (Rm 105) was clean but on first floor right above busy King St. It was hard to sleep as traffic went past all night. On the second night a pneumatic drill was operating close by until very late. I went outside to ask how long the noise would go on for and was told until 4am!! I was unable to change rooms but fortunately found some ear plugs. I would suggest that the hotel supply complimentary ear plugs to clients with rooms on the street. Definitely not a four star hotel by the way and not somewhere I can recommend.

So handy to everything

Only negative would be that the carpet needs refurbishing(in my room and dining room) my room wasn't vacuum cleaned in the week that I was there. Same bit of paper stayed on the floor for the whole week.Otherwise everything else was excellent. Breakfast was great only $6.00 for full cooked breakfast. A real bonus. Had an adjoining bar where I ate one night. Handy to little local restaurants. Staff pleasant and polite. Room had small safe where I could lock my passport and laptop. Had no problems with WiFi. Had t.v, fridge, tea and coffee making facilities and iron, there was also a guest laundry that I hadn't realised was going to be there. Would certainly stay there again, only a few minutes from bus depot for the shuttle.

Good Choice in City Centre

The hotel is close to the Southern Cross Station and has several tram stations around. The room is comfortable and clean. It has an excellent value of money as a hotel in the city centre. Just the wifi signal is not too good.

met my needs

I was only in town 1 night, the room (en-suite) was a good size, basically there to sleep and go Only issue is if you are a light sleeper like me the noise level (especially early hours around 5am ) could annoy you. some sort of generator or maybe elevator noise would run intermittently for about 2 minutes good value and location

Child free weekend

The hotel was close to the football and staff staff where nice that's where anything good stops. The room was too small the bed was too big for the room, you had to climb over the bed to get to the right side of the bed. The bed was really hard the carpet needed dry cleaning it also had poor lighting. And the worst was it had a glass door to the adjoining room which meant we could hear everything from next room including the young child at 5 o'clock in the morning then a old couple at 6 in the morning we went away to catch up on sleep and never got it !!! . We will never stay here again very poor.

Disappointing experience

I wasn't happy with the reception and the lack of service. Basic amenities structurally awkward. Eg shared toilets do not have toilet roll holders and bathrooms do not have security locks. Corridors are multi levels even on the same floor.

It all begins at reception

For me, the whole experience at a hotel is marked by how we are greeted on arrival. If the receptionist is snooty, I don't really care how nice the room is - it spoils everything. The staff at the Sofia on the other hand were LOVELY. A warm greeting and a desire to provide any information required made me feel welcome right away. The refurbishments at the hotel were beautiful and very contemporary, the room layout quite perfect and facilities top notch. I do the trip to Melbourne regularly but never really found an establishment I would like to revisit. This time I think I will do so. The only small disappointment was that there was no microwave - but that is a minor issue. Great job Sophia! Oh, and the lovely old framed photographs of Greek villages around the hallways gave a really classy touch too.

Close to station but no way 4 star

The hotel is one block from Southern Cross Station so it's an ideal location . However the rooms are tiny and staff not friendly . It is a very old building but has been renovated and is clean and tidy . There's a capsule coffee machine as well as tea making facilities. However a staff member who is supposedly one of the family owners was very rude and abrasive when I told him its not a 4 star property. I don't know what are the points to qualify for 4 star, but would assume a pool and restaurant would be essential qualifications . However the room was comfortable and spotlessly clean. The entry and elevator show that it's very old and although open 24 hours , I never saw anyone at reception from when I checked in until I checked out.
