St Paul`s Cathedral
The history of St Paul's Cathedral dates back to the early 19th century, when it was a small simple blue stone church. The humble building became the first church to hold a Christian service in the city. The current grand cathedral was not built until 1880, and it remains very dear to the people of Melbourne, and a popular place of worship today. Architecture enthusiasts will admire its Gothic transitional revival style, designed by William Butterfield, a British architect who was renowned for his ecclesiastical designs. You can enjoy the world-class St. Paul's Choir at special concerts, services, and events.
- Admire St Paul's impressive 13-bell belfry, which is the only one of its kind outside of England, and the110 year-old pipe organ of St Paul’s Cathedral, which is one of the most important landmarks in Melbourne.
- Tour nearby Federation Square which is the city's civic centre and one of the most popular landmarks, featuring government buildings and a large contemporary art gallery.
- Swim with sharks, feed smaller and gentler fish or play with penguins at Melbourne Aquarium, which is a short walk from St Paul's Cathedral.
St Paul's Cathedral is only 800 metres from the centre of Melbourne, right next to the Flinder's Street tram and bus stations. The airport is 23 kilometres from the cathedral, and you can use a taxi, shuttle, train or bus for airport transfer. Since St Paul's Cathedral is in the Central Business District, you will have access to public transportation options including buses, trams and trains. The City Circle tram is a vintage tourist tram that offers a scenic ride around the CBD. You can also walk or bike around this area with ease.
