Scots Church hotels
Scots’ Church is one of the many tourist destinations in the city of Melbourne, Australia. It is a wonderful example of Victorian Gothic architecture, and its classic spires have been an important part of Melbourne’s cityscape since 1874.The church is constructed from Bluestone, Freestone, and Kakanui stone. The interior is resplendent with stained glass windows, basalt columns, vaulted ceilings with timber beams, and decorative timber fittings throughout the church. Now heritage listed, Scots' Church is a working Presbyterian Church with regular weekly services. If you love Gothic architecture, this is a must-see Melbourne attraction.
- View the magnificent pipe organ, with carved timber casework. The four-manual organ was custom-designed and built for Scots' Church overseas in Austria. Musicians give organ recitals occasionally that the Melbourne public can attend.
- Examine the beautiful stained glass panels depicting “The Last Supper” and other biblical scenes.
- Ponder famous people who have been here. These include the famed Melbourne born opera singer Dame Nellie Melba, who was said to have started her singing career as a member of the Scots Church Choir. Queen Elizabeth visited Scots Church in 1961 and 1983.
Scots Church is open to the public from Monday to Friday between the hours of 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Located on the corner of Collins and Russell Streets in the city centre, it is easily accessible by Melbourne public transport links. Collins Street is serviced by several train routes, along with bus and tram routes. Public car parking is available at the Hyatt Car Park, which is diagonally opposite the Church, and there are several other public pay car parks nearby. Taxis are readily available as well.
