Old Treasury Building
Located in Australia’s second largest city on Spring Street is the 1862-built Old Treasury Building. What is now home to a museum that showcases all of Melbourne’s history was once the place that housed the Victoria Government’s Treasury division. The style and building design is considered to be examples of Australia’s finest, showcasing the renaissance revival movement and palazzo form. A number of artefacts dating back to the gold rush era have been carefully preserved and are available for viewing at the building. The building also hosts a number of historic events and expos worth visiting.
- Explore deep within the Old Treasury Building to find preserved gold vaults where gold bullions and Victoria’s public records, which are now considered historic and rare, were once stored.
- Go and see the number of exquisite Melbourne artists, architects and historical artefact exhibitions being showcased in this old building including other guided tours and activities such as those designed for scholars and tourists.
- See unique exhibitions dedicated to the Australian heads of state and parliamentary members as well as a depiction of the growth development of this Melbourne building and additional works of its designer JJ Clark.
Travellers can enter the city via either the Melbourne Airport or Avalon Airport. Melbourne is the main hub handling both international and domestic flights whilst Avalon handles local flights only. Skybus services shuttle travellers to the Southern Cross Station Terminal located on the west end of the central business district. Greyhound and Firefly express buses operate in and around the city offering tourists easy routes to destinations such as the Old Treasury Building, the IMAX Cinema and Shrine of Remembrance as well as the Luna Park and St Kilda Botanical Gardens.
