Block Arcade hotels
A historic shopping location in Melbourne, Australia, the Block Arcade was built between 1891 and 1893. The Block Arcade features a gorgeous, ornately decorated interior featuring mosaics in the floors, overhead glass canopies, beautifully carved stone and wrought iron details. It is one of the best examples of Australia's Victorian Mannerist architecture, and is located opposite Melbourne’s Royal Arcade. With such architectural details, it would be easy to wander around inside just to view the walls and ceiling, but the shops, large and small, are worth exploring. The shops within the Block Arcade feature many Australian-made goods and foods.
- Step back into Melbourne's history by taking a two-hour tour of the Block Arcade on a Tuesday or Thursday; tours include Devonshire Tea.
- Stop at Hopetoun Tearooms for a drink or small meal; the cakes in the window are an appetizing draw for many of the people in Melbourne.
- Shop at the small shops throughout the Block Arcade to find uniquely Australian souvenirs while enjoying the beautifully decorated features of the building designed by David C. Askew.
Located in downtown Melbourne on historic Collins Road, the Block Arcade is easy to find. It is just a block or two away from a bevy of hotels in Melbourne, and is easy to find via hired car or taxi. The Yarra Heritage Circle tram lines 70, and 75 go around the outer edge of the historic district, and you can disembark and walk a block or two into the centre to Block Arcade. From outside the heritage circle, you can take tram line 48,109, or 112 to go directly down Collins Road to a stop outside the Block Arcade.
