Leisurely Lakes Entrance

Replace your iPhone with a fishing rod and your takeaway soy latte with a beer and take a stretch in Victoria’s coastal getaway – Lakes Entrance. With beaches and parklands stretching as far as the eye can see (literally), Lakes Entrance is the perfect weekend retreat from the bustle of the city.

Delve into the caves, take a dip in the swimming hole, or go on an exploration into one of the largest old-timey gold-digging operations in the world at the Oriental Claims Historic Area. Take a stroll along the seemingly endless stretch of sand on Ninety Mile Beach, or jump on a bike and get those legs pedaling along the East Gippsland Rail Trail.

10. The Lakes National Park A plethora of walking trails straddle the lakes. The self-guided Lake Reeve Nature Trail is particularly popular (and beautiful).

5. Surf Shack You are never too old to give surfing a crack, and with pretty reasonable lesson prices and some of the best beaches around, the conditions are perfect.

9. Fishing on the Beach Bring your rod along and try your hand at reeling in some salmon.

4. Mitchell River National Park Take a walk down the river and keep an eye out for the Den of Nargun gorge, mentioned in many Aboriginal legends.

8. Nyerimilang Heritage Park Get some air and mosey about the gardens or try out many of the walking tracks branching off from this park.

3. Buchan Caves Reserves Wander into the grotto that is the fascinating limestone formations created by rain seeping underground.

7. Lake Tyers Forest Park Bring your picnic blanket or bust out your canoe and head out for a paddle.

2. East Gippsland Farmers Market Head in on the first Sunday of every month to pick up some mouthwatering local produce.

6. Wyanga Winery Cruise Kick back with a deluxe range of local wines as you cruise along the coast – lunch or dinner also included.

1. Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park From lakes to wetlands, there is an abundance of aquatic voyaging to be enjoyed in this coastal park.

Take a figurative trip to the Arctic at the Advanced Dog Sled Challenge in August.

For a chilled out Mardi Gras with a health and well-being angle, head to the Spring Migration Festival in September.

For some theatre and dance under the vibrant glow of fireworks, October’s High Country Festival and Spring Arts is a must.

Parade along at the annual Seafarers Multicultural Festival each December.

· Lakes Entrance is generally warmer than the rest of Victoria.

· Winter temperatures can top 20ºC (68ºF), and there are relatively few rainy days.

· Summers tend to be quite mild and are the perfect time for aquatic adventuring.

· Probably the easiest way to get around town is to drive your own wheels, or rent a car for a few days.

· There are plenty of bike tracks around Lakes Entrance. And with so much nature to explore, a day of biking or walking will do wonders!

· There isn’t much by way of public transport, but there are plenty of buses and coaches coming in and out.
