Hawthorn is a thriving suburb of Melbourne located just six kilometres from the central business district of the city. The town was first founded in the 1830’s and is named for the hawthorn-style bushes that are ubiquitous in the area. Hawthorn is one of the last bastions of the expansion that happened during the Gold Rush and now features some of the most posh and expensive neighbourhoods in all of the capital. The strong ethnic diversity of here is reflected in its array of top-notch restaurants, which draw visitors from all over the city.
- Head to Glenferrie Road, the main shopping area of Hawthorn, where everything from supermarkets to specialty boutiques awaits bargain hunters from around the city.
- Play an exciting and brutal game of Australian Rules football at the Glenferrie Oval, where Melbourne’s top teams, including Hawthorn FC, used to play.
- Walk the manicured grounds of Scotch College, where Melbourne’s elite have been educated since it opened in 1851.
Hawthorn can be reached easily from Melbourne using either the train or tram. There are stops for the train at the Hawthorn, Glenferrie and Auburn stations and in addition, the town is also served by six lines of the tram. Many people choose to drive from the city to Hawthorn to enjoy a day of shopping, but parking along Glenferrie Road can be tough to find, especially on the weekends so be sure to get there early. There are shuttles that go from the Melbourne Airport to this neighbourhood, but the most convenient method to get there is by taxi.
