The famous café culture of Melbourne finds its genesis in the suburb of Carlton, where Italian owned cafes first started serving cappuccino in the 1950’s. Located just a few kilometres from Melbourne’s central business district and known as the city’s “Little Italy” because of its European style cafes and squares, this neighbourhood’s history began in 1851 when Melbourne expanded due to the Victoria Gold Rush, a history well substantiated by the Victorian mansions that still add elegance to the streets. Today Carlton is a culturally diverse area featuring many different restaurants that make it a haven for foodies.
- Take a walk down Lygon Street at the heart of Carlton, where Melbourne citizens come to sample from some of the specialist gelatarias and continental cake cafes for which the area is famous.
- Enjoy the exquisite beauty of Victorian-era landscape design at Carlton Gardens, one of Melbourne’s World Heritage Sites and the home of the Royal Exhibition Building.
- Explore the touring hall of the Melbourne Museum where past exhibits have included everything from Egyptian mummies to dinosaurs from China.
Melbourne features modern and efficient public transportation and Carlton is well connected to it. The Tram is one of the cheapest and best ways to get around the city and there are many routes that pass through Carlton. There are also several bus routes that stop at various points including Lygon Street at the heart of the area. Cycling is very popular in Melbourne and most of the streets here have bike lanes where cyclists can safely ride. From the Melbourne Airport just take a shuttle to the central business district, which is only a short walk away.
