What travelers to Coober Pedy are saying

Very touristy town. Exceeded my expectation. Will spend an extra night next time
JACOBUS D. 10 Apr 2015

Choose from our uncommonly excellent selection of Coober Pedy hotels, which match up perfectly with the local vibe. This funky and unique town is located in southern Australia, smack in the middle of the desolate Outback. You might recognize the terrain from one of the movies that have been filmed there, such as “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”. It boasts a profusion of opal mines, along with underground homes. The subterranean, (it’s much cooler underground), living is a response to the harsh and very hot climate. Travellers enjoy delving into how Coober Pedy locals live and work in this severe yet enticing environment.

An underground mine tour is a mandatory Coober Pedy activity. The Old Timers Mine shows you how opal mining is done, and it has a nice museum and underground home. Everyone loves mama kangaroos and baby joeys, and you can see them live and in person at Josephine’s Kangaroo Orphanage. A tour of the Painted Desert Cave makes for a fun day trip, where you will motor through the great Outback and the Moon Plains on your way to see the colourful cave.

Book your Coober Pedy accommodation in time for the annual Opal Festival, where you can join in celebrating all facets of this valuable stone. There are parades, an Opal Festival Ball, food and beverages and much more! Sign up for free membership with HotelClub to take advantage of our member benefits.

Coober Pedy’s airport is located just outside town, and it’s also accessible via road. The nearest major airport is in Adelaide, approximately 690 kilometres away. Many mine tours include transport, or you can rent a car to reach the local attractions. You’ll find that this Opal Capital of the World is also a precious gem of a holiday spot!

It was ok as a overnite stop
Was ok, not quite what I was expecting. Was hard to find places in town to eat, especially breakfast. Places always closed. Room was ok but dated. Bathroom very old.
