Awesome little island getaway

Hotel is great!! Id recommend it for those on a budget. It is a basic family island in the whitsundays and for the price you cant go wrong. It isnt trying to be hamilton or hayman and is totally chilled - so don't expect luxury. The food options are limited to one restaurant but are decent. The rooms are tired but clean and comfortable. But having been to a few of the islands now Long Island was a pleasant surprise.

Long Island Weekend

Pluses: Very relaxed atmosphere. Helpful staff. Plenty of activities. Good food. Comfortable room. Minus: The room had aircon but we don't like using it at night so a ceiling fan would have been great.

Great family getaway

If you are looking for 5 star luxury on a Whitsunday island, this is not the place for you. However if you are looking for a affordable family getaway with a unique island experience with the kids, you just found it.

Ocean View Room Ground Floor

Had a great time, we look ground floor Ocean view and will be doing same next time.... The staff were excellent above and beyond... Island was relaxing. This is not a 4 start resort but if looking for quality 3 star this is the island. We had all our meals at the bar whilst relaxing to the island entertainment. Relaxing no fuss holiday and for sure going back with a good book for some serious chill out time. Note Cocktails were a bit expensive for the type of island.... .

Tired Rundown Dump

Tiny, cramped, dirty room with noisy air con, no fan, moth eaten curtains and suspicious white stains on pillows. The gardens were weed infested as were the gutters of the buildings with grass and trees growing out of them. The food ordering computer broke down so that took 1hr 15min to feed our 1 year old. Paths were an uneven trip hazard with rain puddled everywhere. Failed attempt at erosion control has resulted in rocks placed along foreshore now spread all over the beach and no attempt to clean up the mess. Not enough chairs for how many tables - clearly as they rot they aren't replaced. Staff quote - 'I suppose I should do some work'. Water sports open from 12pm to 2pm only, that's if someone shows up to open it. Must love potatoes as every meal is dominated by them. Love it!! Staff did there best to cover for what is clearly poor management issues and no resources. Thanks for the free champagne and staff apologies for food delay, appreciated.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

Pelican Island at low tide on the other side of the Island has a rock ridge leading to it. Look closely at the lighter coloured parts and you will find loads of nice shells.

Very very disappointing

Location is the only 'good' thing, providing seclusion is desirable and its not schoolies week. Presentation is lousy, staff are for the most part bored & disinterested, food is at best 'ordinary' & everything is way overpriced for such a below standard place. Staff quarters look like something out of a Bombay slum, which wouldn't exactly do a lot for job satisfaction. There is supposedly an onsite 'General Manager' who rarely appears in person however I've noticed her making the odd response to reviews, invariably claiming she is particularly interested in feedback. In practice however, the only conclusion one could make is that nobody in management gives a rats about the resort as its run-down / dilapidated / doesn't appear to have had anything spent on it in at least ten years. We requested a quiet room after reviews warned about the din created by inebriates getting on the sauce late at night. Response was 'we can't guarantee to fulfil requests, its a matter of luck. On arrival after a 20 hour train trip, we requested an earlier than 2pm check-in but were told that wasn't possible because 'they were extremely busy'. We later discovered occupancy was around 10% !!! Baggage is regularly dumped outside rooms where its unattended & unsecured for hours and the 'secure baggage room' at reception is never locked, hence it is readily accessible by anyone whether the rightful owner or otherwise. If you have anything of value, you'll need to lug it with you from when your arrive til when you finally get into your room (in our case that was 5 hours). Similar situation exists on departure. Public toilet / shower facilities near the pool / bar area are disgusting and fit for neither man nor beast. Whether or not 2pm check-in is industry standard, one would think a place suffering low occupancy would attempt to rectify the problem by offering exemplary hospitality. Rooms are tiny, televisions the smallest I've ever seen, and smoke / noise from adjacent rooms is a constant problem. Some guests run airconditioners 24 x 7 to blank out noise from adjacent rooms. Food is another gripe, choices are sparse & everything is over-salted so unsuitable for anyone on a health kick. Surprisingly in an area teeming with fish, the only variety on the menu is Vietnamese factory farmed basa ($6 a kg in Aldi). Opening times of shop, bar & 'restaurant' are very much based on the whim of staff, possibly why there is no information of any kind provided in the rooms. Official blurb warns of dire consequences for anyone bringing their own grog, ignore this nonsense and bring what you want as there is no guarantee if / when the bar will open for business. Even when someone gets around to opening the doors, prices are at least three times what you'd pay on the mainland. In any case, bag checks would constitute invasion of privacy. Note that 'restaurant' is a grandiose term for something more like a military style mess than anything else. Mind you a military establshment would be spotlessly clean, something that can't be said for the Long Island Resort equivalent. My guess is that continuing low occupancy is responsible for owner 'Ocean Hotels' neglecting maintenance however the issues of second rate staff, mediocre service, uninspired food choices & predatory pricing combine to ensure repeat business is highly unlikely.. Long Island Resort will never win any awards as its far too old & originally designed down-market clientele (it was reportedly a Club Med in its prime). That said, there is no excuse for rude & careless staff, filthy facilities, excessive pricing, at best, very ordinary food & management that is rarely if ever in attendance.

Save your money and book someplace else where management cares about presentation. With such low occupancy its inconceivable any significant maintenance will be done on this place before the forest takes over.

Bitter Disappointment

Excited to come here as been here 7 years earlier and had a great time. Arrived to find they had no booking - argued that the confirmation wasn't final until i showed them the booking number then blamed booking agent. Staff weren't trained - Took ages on the phone (mostly on hold) talking to boss before they could do anything, even to get room rate. under staffed - waited ages at reception and wait staff ignored us when trying to get table for lunch. luxury room was dated with blocked sink no tv reception broken blinds & partially used toiletries - did manage to get partial analogue after handyman came around to fix and unblock sink. the luxury gourmet (description) lunch buffet had only one hot dish (curry) with flies crawling over it - so did the salad so we had to cancel our booking it was disgusting. Had the bar lunch but was attacked by birds which stole our fish from the plate - were constantly fending off with empty cans this is all just in the first few hours...Tried the $38 buffet for dinner what a mistake - only entre was watery soup with lots of colour but no taste. Only salads were a rocket (just rocket) and boiled rice which had a few pieces of raw onion tossed through it. You could pick a main off the menu but it wasn't cooked fresh and had just been reheated. The desert was store bought cake (highlight) and some sort of cheap sponge cake topped with a sickly chocolate sauce. Was hoping to stay for the whole next day and sail on the catarmarans they had when I was here last, but they no longer had them - Booked the earliest ferry out of there!

A little shabby chic but has a

A little shabby chic but has a lovely charm about it, apparently it is undergoing a refurb shortly, had a beach view room which was great and opened directly onto the sand, beautiful island, great for a relaxing break, staff very friendly and helpful, found it really reasonable too considering you are a captured audience it was nice not to be ripped off, it is excellent value for money, having stayed on hamilton island i would def come back here again, its not flashy or overpriced, its simple and unfussy, walks are great, has everything you need for a chilled out holiday
