Fraser Island General Information
As a gorgeous island platform to some of Queensland, Australia’s most significant destinations, Fraser Island is supreme. Of course, the island across from the City of Hervey Bay is one of those destinations, most notably as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992.
The basis for Fraser Island’s UNESCO inscription was simple and conclusive. With a total area of 1,840 km2, the island is the dominant sand island on the planet and as such, is a nonpareil destination for nature lovers and field scientists alike. The exquisite fauna and flora on Fraser Island is incomparable and inhabits a magnificent expanse of rainforest and remarkable freshwater dune lakes. With a tiny resident population of 360 people, Fraser Island is first and foremost a wilderness sanctuary. Close to half a million people visit the island every year to camp, trek and comb the island’s immaculate coastline. Animals on Fraser Island include a healthy dingo population in addition to venomous snakes, goannas, geckos, frogs and even the occasional saltwater crocodile. Bird lovers flock to Fraser Island in order to spot rare breeds like the ground parrot and off the coast, a keen eye may spot the odd dugong, tiger shark or humpback whale. Visitors to Fraser Island can easily investigate the rest of Great Sandy National Park in Queensland as well, which includes the Coral Sea coast between Noosa Heads and Rainbow Beach.
