The Cairns Hotel

Open plan layout to a central courtyard, with a small enclosed swimming pool and jacuzzi. The restaurant was closed during our stay, but facilities were available for breakfast. A$20/A$15 Full/Continental. The room was spacious and cooled by both an overhead fan and A/C unit if required. FREE WiFi was also provided hotel wide. The hotel is perfectly situated, with easy access to the harbour and the CBD. Also we were not disturbed by the colony of flying fox fruit bats which inhabit the fig trees closer to the centre of town. I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel, or staying there again should I return to Cairns. My wife's only complaint was that no shower cap was provided !

Past its glory days

The hotel is very conveniently located within walking distance to the Esplanade and downtown. The standard room is a good size and the bed was comfortable and linen clean. However, none of the room windows open and so the room smelt musty and it was either very stuffy or super-cold having to use the air con. Very basically furnished - no bedside mat, bathroom floor not very clean, light bulbs were the cold-white type. The free wi-fi signal dropped in and out and wasn't much use.

very good position

It's very good position, close to everything thing, especially the resturants. The staff are helpful, but the room smells when we entered. The bare floor looks dirty with some marks, although may not be really dirty. The bathroom is very old with all cracked tiles. We could hear footsteps above our head and shower from other rooms.

Good value

We stayed for two nights before our trip to the outback, and one night on the way home - both rooms were excellent, as was the restaurant. We borrowed a Smart car for the day, and it was great fun, not to mention excellent value.

We went , felt ripped off

So called luxury just didnt exist, no robe or slippers as stated on their website, room looked worn in places, bathroom was a joke, the shower didnt even work, when we told staff they just didn't seem to care. As for the restaurant , what a joke, overpriced, we left hungry. The only thing this place had going for it is the location. The 54 channels of tv were mostly in chinese. We would never stay here again as we have stayed at other places close to the city that are way better value for money and way more comfortable.

Average for price

Some lack of overall management attention at checkin. You need to ask for tea and milk, which should not be necessary. If you don't, you will have nothing in your room when you need it.

Tropical hotel

Convenient location walk to everything. Lovely tropical surroundings. Spacious room with good amenities. Comfortable rather than fancy. Very practical bathroom set up with showe/bath and toilet in one room and vanity and robes in the other. Distinctive shutters.

Old and dated

Room was old an dated. Dirty shower tiles the grout needed a well earned scrub. Bathroom was tiny. One surprise was they provided a great hairdryer not like the ones that are attached to the wall in most hotels. Don't bother with the pool it was just like our spa at home on a cool night! 32c ! The terracotta tiles were all broken. The one good thing was you could hire one of their 4 mini smart cars for $45 a day we couldn't hire a car anywhere they were all out on hire. The hotel was a bit of a distance from the big shopping centre but not too far from the Restuarant's on the esplanade. We walk at bit so didn't mind the distances. Stayed one night glad it was one night. Then stayed at rydges esplanade which was lovely.
