Boisterous Airlie Beach
Airlie Beach is the doorway to the Great Barrier Reef and the islands of the Whitsundays. And as doorways go, it is a very beautiful, peninsula-situated one! Like an older brother calling you ‘chicken’, the entire town seems to be either pushing you to enter the water or to enjoy one more drink amid its vibrant party atmosphere.
Abel Point Marina is your access point to the wonderful water world that is the Great Barrier Reef, but you can also take a scenic flight by seaplane or helicopter to Heart Reef and experience the clear water from the air. Return in the evening and enjoy Airlie Beach’s nightlife. They call this the ‘party town of the Whitsundays’ for a reason, and many a bleary-eyed and sunburned backpacker will tell you that they came for a three-day sailing trip… and ended up spending three months.

The Whitsunday Region and Islands in Queensland, Australia is a veritable paradise, with phenomenal biodiversity and some of the most desirable and pristine coastlines on the planet. Famously, Tourism Queensland put out a worldwide call in 2009 for people to apply for “The Best Job in the World” as caretaker of the Great Barrier Reef islands. The result was well over 30,000 online submissions and a serious boost to the local tourism economy.
The diminutive town of Airlie Beach is just across the Whitsunday Islands on the mainland coast of Queensland and serves as a popular departure point for the spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Great Barrier Reef. With a tropical climate and laid-back vibe, the community of under 3,000 people is a brilliant beach escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
