What travelers to Airlie Beach are saying

Airlie Beach is a fine town but it's main value is as a jumping-off point to explore the larger Whitsundays/Eungella area. The town itself is a little tacky and loud.

If you've seen the not so classy side of Phuket you've seen Airlie Beach. Obviously great for backpacks but not for everyone.

Boisterous Airlie Beach

Airlie Beach is the doorway to the Great Barrier Reef and the islands of the Whitsundays. And as doorways go, it is a very beautiful, peninsula-situated one! Like an older brother calling you ‘chicken’, the entire town seems to be either pushing you to enter the water or to enjoy one more drink amid its vibrant party atmosphere.

Abel Point Marina is your access point to the wonderful water world that is the Great Barrier Reef, but you can also take a scenic flight by seaplane or helicopter to Heart Reef and experience the clear water from the air. Return in the evening and enjoy Airlie Beach’s nightlife. They call this the ‘party town of the Whitsundays’ for a reason, and many a bleary-eyed and sunburned backpacker will tell you that they came for a three-day sailing trip… and ended up spending three months.

Aarlie Beach’s Top 10

10. Whitehaven Beach A short boat trip away are the bright white sands of this famous beach. 5. Goorganga Wetlands Situated close by, the wetlands offer a change from the tropical beaches.
9. Diving the Reef No words can do this justice – you just have to get beneath the water and be blown away. 4. Airlie Beach Markets Held every Saturday, pick up some local arts and crafts from the makers themselves.
8. Sailing With so many amazing beaches and hidden coves, how will you ever decide where to stop for lunch? 3. Conway National Park Take a walk through the rainforest and let your cares disappear.
7. Crocodile Safaris Riding on a tractor, cruising down a river on a boat and bush tucker – this is Australia. 2. Airlie Beach Lagoon A safe place to swim away from the nasty stingers.
6. Boathaven Beach Visit Airlie Beach’s newest addition – here’s a clue: it’s a beach! 1. Great Barrier Reef It’s the world’s largest reef and it’s ours. To come all this way and not visit it would be downright un-Australian!

Airlie Beach Events

In August, Airlie Beach Race Week sees yachties from far and wide visit the region to do battle on the water.

The Great Whitsunday Fun Race and Outdoor Party in September is an amusing event where everybody dresses up and the party goes well into the evening.

In September, the Whitsunday Boat and Leisure Show will have you green with envy. Also in September is the Airlie Beach Festival of Sport, which can be enjoyed by anyone who can run, swim, ride a bike or hit a volleyball. So nearly everyone, then!

You won’t be bored in October at the Whitsunday Reef Festival, with everything from sand sculpting competitions to fashion shows on offer.

Airlie Beach attractions

The Whitsunday Region and Islands in Queensland, Australia is a veritable paradise, with phenomenal biodiversity and some of the most desirable and pristine coastlines on the planet. Famously, Tourism Queensland put out a worldwide call in 2009 for people to apply for “The Best Job in the World” as caretaker of the Great Barrier Reef islands. The result was well over 30,000 online submissions and a serious boost to the local tourism economy.

The diminutive town of Airlie Beach is just across the Whitsunday Islands on the mainland coast of Queensland and serves as a popular departure point for the spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Great Barrier Reef. With a tropical climate and laid-back vibe, the community of under 3,000 people is a brilliant beach escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Nearby points of interest include Conway National Park, Vic Hislop Great White Shark and Whale Expo and Hill Inlet.
