Uluru Rock Trip

After a good drive from Alice on a hot day was delighted to be greeted with a friendly smile at our hotel. Check in was smooth as silk and we were in our room within minutes of arriving. The staff were very friendly at all the venues we attended. Breakfast was simply the best with a great variety of delicious food to choose from, well worth paying the price considering the location. We visited both the Olgas and Uluru and were impressed with what we saw, especially the large number of tourists at both locations. Look forward to a re-visit with some friends. Thank you

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

If your budget does not allow you to enjoy the Resorts menus then local shops and restaurants are only short walk away. A great selection of food at modest prices.

Hotel makes you captive for gouging

Desert Gardens hotel is one of several run by the one company that manages all the hotels and tours in Uluru. The hotel makes it appear that free shuttles take you to Ayers Rock, but the shuttles only take you from one hotel to another. My advice: be sure to rent a car before arriving in Uluru so you can drive to Ayers Rock and other sites when you want and stay as long as you want. If you don't, you must go on bus tours run by the hotel. They are very expensive ($95 per adult for an afternoon tour to the Olgas, $ 65 or 75 To Ayers Rock). A car rental will save you several hundred dollars, and you won't have to come and go according to the bus schedules (which are limited to very few departures per day). Ayers Rock and the Olgas are fantastic, but the bus tour prices are equally fantastic. I recommend this hotel only because there is really no alternative. The WiFi is touted as free, and it is in the lobby, but only for one hour every 24 - hour period. After one hour it costs $7 per hour. If you want it in your room, it is $15 a day extra. In the lobby you can buy a liter bottle of water for $6.50, and you'd better have water when you hike around. Get the picture? Gouging at every turn.

Great view

Overall a good experience. We had a deluxe Rock view room and it lived up to that billing with a great view of Uluru itself. We sat in bed with coffees watching the morning sun first hit Uluru :) Room was also spacious and very clean, as it probably should be for that price. Only down sides was that the air con (centrally controlled) was a bit too cold and they could probably do with an extra couple of porters in the foyer area to assist people.

A bit dated

The best attribute for this hotel was its staff, they were just lovely and couldn't do enough for you. The room was dated and you are definitely paying just for the view. There is a free shuttle bus to and from the airport and also around the resort which was very welcome. You are however a captive audience and everything else is extremely expensive. I'm still glad that I went as Ayers Rock and The Olgas are simply stunning, it's just a shame that I felt as if I was being ripped off with everything else.

Go in winter (June, July, August) as there are no flies as the minus temperatures during the night kill them off.

Perfect location for the rock!

We had a great stay at Desert Gardens. They are also part of the Accor group which mean that as I have a gold Le Club card I got a free upgrade to a delux room. Our room was on the ground floor and had a nice balcony area which had a view Ayers Rock! It was blocked slightly by trees and srubs but you could see most of it. The hotel is in a great location with lots of things around it in walking distance like shopping centre and restaurants. You also have access to the Sails pool of you stay here which is great because the pool at the Desert is a bit poor.

Crowne Plaza is in a great location

Crowne Plaza is in a great location and easy walking distance to the town centre and Casino. Hire bikes are also available from outside the hotel. The in-house dining is excellent, with two great restaurants to choose from. Buffet breakfast is also excellent. Recommend the Crowne Plaza if you are seeking good quality accommodation and services.

Very expensive for an ordinary

Very expensive for an ordinary room (although rated 4-star). Fortunately, it is in the midst of a "desert garden" which makes the stay enjoyable.
