Darwin Chinatown hotels
The Chinese immigrants who arrived in 1874, to find labor in the gold fields and railways, built the first Chinatown along the Cavanaugh Street with fifty shops. The bombing of Darwin in 1942, during the World War II brought down the whole town to ashes.
Presently Chinatown is a very small market with a maze of streets and alleys packed with shops and street vendors. These stalls provide traditional Chinese herbs and medicines, exotic foods, handicrafts and fortune-tellers. The merchandise is fairly inexpensive and of reasonably good quality. The Darwin Chinatown market at night is the best sample of authentic Chinese favorites at the bustling hawker centre of food filled streets.
Sixty years after that unfortunate bombing the efforts are being made to bring back the glory of the lost town to its full vigor, with the help of the local Chinese community and Darwin City Council. Chinatown is being expanded and reconstructed to make it a popular place attracting many tourists in Darwin once again. This extended Chinatown of the Northern Territory is planned to be completed by 2010 with a cost of AU $90 million, which will include a Chinatown complex, nine floor office tower, two major hotels, eight levels of city council car parks, 30 retail outlets and a food hall. The vitality and excitement of the complex will attract local, national and overseas tourists alike which will have blend of both ancient and modern culture. The accommodation is very easy to find with hotels like Skycity Darwin, and Marina View Holiday Apartments Darwin only a walk away from Chinatown. Check for cheap bookings with the Hotel.
