Town Hall hotels
The beloved Sydney Town Hall is situated in the heart of central Sydney and its steps have been a favourite meeting place for locals since it was constructed in the 1880’s. The lavish structure was built from local sandstone in the Grand Victorian Second Empire style and its ornamented composition and fanciful roofs have gone unchanged making the Town Hall the only non-religious building in the vicinity from this era to retain its original function and look. Its location opposite the Queen Victoria building near St. Andrew’s Cathedral makes this iconic building a popular stop on architectural tours the city.
- Visit the extravagant Centennial Hall of the Sydney Town Hall to see the magnificent Grand Organ, one of the world’s largest pipe organs since it was first installed in 1890.
- Walk the exterior of the building to admire the amazing detail of the sandstone carvings on the roof, a fairy tale collection of ornate balconies and arches.
- See the changing landscape, evolving fashion and civic leaders of Sydney in the Town Hall’s art collection, a dedicated civic gallery that tells the rich story of the city’s past, present and future.
Central Sydney is serviced by a convenient and comprehensive public transportation network that connects Town Hall to the rest of the city. Sydney City Buses and CityRail both have stops nearby and are just a short distance away by foot. Cycling has become very popular in Sydney and the city has constructed an intricate network of bicycle paths and lanes that make cycling a safe and relaxed form of transportation. There are bike racks located just outside the entrance to City Hall for those who choose to get around by bike.
