The Rocks, Circular Quay hotels
Found at the base of the Sydney Harbour Bridge on the shores of Sydney Cove, the Rocks is the most historically significant area in Sydney. The Rocks is the oldest area of the city and has so many historic colonial buildings that it has often been dubbed the “outdoor museum of Sydney.” First developed in the 18th century when it was known as a slum haven for sailors and prostitutes, the Rocks is now a collection of old and new, as heritage buildings surround a vibrant array of restaurants, cafes, and boutique shops.
- Visit the Rocks area of Sydney on the weekend for the Rocks Market, a diverse collection of handcrafted gift items and food made by artisans from around Australia.
- Climb to the top of Observatory Hill where you will find the country’s oldest windmill while getting spectacular views of Sydney and the harbour below.
- Stop and have a frosty pint of beer at the Lord Nelson Pub, a 19th century icon that is the oldest remaining pub in the city.
The Rocks is the main feature of the central business district of Sydney and can be reached in a number of ways using the city’s great public transportation. The Circular Quay station of the train is the nearest stop to the Rocks and is within walking distance. Those who want a more scenic trip can take a ferry that stops at the boat terminal near the Museum of Contemporary Art. Walking is the main activity in the Rocks, as it gives people the chance to see the historic buildings and to stop along the way for snacks and drinks.
