Hyde Park Barracks
The Hyde Park Barracks is an historic building situated in the heart of Sydney, Australia. This building is unique because it was designed by convict architect Francis Greenway in 1818 as a place to house male convicts. The Hyde Park Barracks is listed as a World Heritage Site as it is one of the best examples of how Europeans expanded their colonial powers through the use of convict labour. The Hyde Park Barracks closed in 1848 after being Sydney’s principal lodging place for male criminals. Now the building is a public museum dedicated to exploring this part of Sydney’s history.
- Visit the public museum at Hyde Park Barracks for an idea of what day-to-day life was like for convicts in Sydney during the 19th century.
- Pay a visit to the Irish Famine Memorial whilst at the Hyde Park Barracks for a sobering reminder of how tough life was for prisoners, many of whom died of starvation.
- Visit Sydney in late November or December when the Hyde Park Barracks are lit up for the Macquarie Night Lights, a beautiful display that that transforms the building into a colourful spectrum of light.
Sydney features a great system of public transportation that makes it easy to get around the city. The easiest way to get to the Hyde Park Barracks is to take the City Circle train line and get off at the St. James station that is just a short walk away. Those taking the Eastern Suburbs train line can get off at the Martin Place station, about ten minutes away on foot. Those with private cars should probably leave them at home, as there is no public parking at the Hyde Park Barracks.
