The grand Victorian facades on some of Newtown’s oldest buildings are testament to this town’s once prosperous past. After the Depression and well into the mid-twentieth century the town became run-down and working-class. Since the establishment of the Burren Street Campus of Sydney University, however, Newtown now has the cosmopolitan atmosphere of a University town, with a diverse population, and gentrified backstreets. A plethora of small shops await you on King Street, many with a strong Greek presence. Visit the memorial to the Dunbar shipwreck at St Stephen’s Church graveyard, or walk to Sydney Park to sit and contemplate life.
- Browse through artisan crafts and art in the small shops on King Street; when you are tired of shopping, stop at one of the many Greek delis and enjoy fresh olives, cheese and other local and imported delicacies.
- Visit Newtown’s St Stephen’s church and the memorial to those lost in the Dunbar and Catherine Adams shipwrecks: tragedies that occurred only two days apart in 1857.
- Stroll around Sydney Park before you leave Newtown and take the time to see the chimney stacks of the former brick work factory.
From Sydney proper, you can get to the centre of this district by train or bus. Parking can be an issue, so you may want to leave your car behind. Trains to Newtown run from Central station, so get there from anywhere in the city. Bus lines 411 and 423 take you to Newtown, passing the University of Sydney campus as well. Once in the area, things are pretty compact and walkable, as most university areas remain. Stroll down King Street, or take a side trip to wander to the university area proper or the church and cemetery.
