Capital Hill

Capital Hill is the nerve-centre of Australian federal politics in Canberra, the capital city of Australia. The compound is dominated by the spectacular New Parliament House and an enormous towering flagpole that flies the Australian flag. It houses the administrative offices of all the sitting and opposition federal members, members of the Senate, and the Prime Minister. Capital Hill is a mini-city with its own post office, banks, cafes, bar and restaurant, travel agency, and day care centre. Parts of the building are open to the public for viewing of the many art works, and stunningly crafted architectural features.

  • Take a Guided Tour of the most iconic building in Canberra – New Parliament House – and see the sumptuous Great Hall, works of art by famous Australian artists, and parliamentarians in action.
  • Walk on the grassed roof of the parliament and capture the spectacular view across the Old Parliament House through to Anzac Parade and the Australian War Memorial, a perfectly framed visual scene of Canberra.
  • Stop and rest at the Queens Terrace Café at Capital Hill and enjoy a meal or refreshment out on the terrace with a fabulous view across the hills and environs.

As Australia’s Capital City, Canberra has excellent transport links - an international airport, long-distance buses from major regional and interstate cities, rail access to Sydney and regional NSW, and well maintained connecting highways and roads. The city‘s public transport system is a network of bus routes providing adequate coverage of the city and suburbs. Several bus routes have stops at Parliament House on Capital Hill. There is a large free public parking area underground for private cars, coach tours and taxicabs. There is a free phone line in the car park to call a taxi if desired.

Always visiting for my partners work. We attempted part of the Centenary Trail on bike this time we were down - great concept - though the start in the city is not well signed. Look forward to attempting more of it next time we're in town.
