You can do better

I had two overnight stays in Buenos Aires in late March/early October. My first was at the Howard Johnson's in Recoleta. HIGHLY recommended BTW for a budget boutique hotel. The NH Latino--a much different story. If I'd not been at HOJO's the week before I probably wouldn't have much to compare it to--but the former has me somewhat 'spoiled'. The NH Latino is a 'tired' hotel. Rooms are spacious--but the entire place is just slightly daggy and has the smell of 'old hotel'. The towels smelled like they had some sort of funky soap or perhaps their version of mildew. They were clean--just not fresh (at all). Service was just okay--not bad--but not great. Staff seemed moderately inattentive at first. Tried to get me to fill in a registration form with all personal details including passport # and a written credit card # which I refused to do. I let them see both---but there is no way that I would write those down for anyone/everyone to see. Overall--you could do worse I suppose but I also know you can do MUCH better in Buenos Aires. There are a TON of small hotels in the city center. Read the reviews and make your best guess. Finally--I can and do recommend the Howard Johnson's in Recoleta. Small but recently refurbished. Great staff and a great location (3 blocks from the Recoleta mall, etc.)

Dining tip: Short drive from hotel

For fresh buffet food, a good variety of side dishes and some great barbecue, Siga La Vaga is the place to haunt. Very popular with locals and a good value for dining in the Madera district. This place translates into 'follow the cow' and there is more meat served here than anywhere else in Buenos Aires. Plus, you also get a free bottle of wine or a litre of beer ... it's your choice.
