Top 10 Sports Events in 2013
By and large, post-Summer Olympic Games calendar years barely register a blip on the sports and athletics competition radar. Not so 2013, however, as this top 10 proves.

Where: New Orleans, U.S.A.
New Orleans puts on a party like no other city. The Big Easy’s post-Katrina phoenix rise takes another step forward when the Superdome hosts halftime pop diva Beyoncé Knowles and, presumably, two very good football teams.

Where: Schladming, Styria, Austria

When: June 1 – July 6

2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup
When: June 21 – July 13
Future Lionel Messis, Andrés Iniestas and Cristiano Ronaldos will take Turkey by storm in June and July for the first FIFA tournament to visit the country.

The Ashes – England and Australia Test Cricket
When: July 10 – August 25
The likes of Old Trafford, Lord’s and The Oval will host the most venerable biennial rivalry in Test cricket next summer.

Where: Barcelona, Spain

2013 World Championships in Athletics
When: August 10 – August 18
Where: Moscow, Russia
Usain Bolt’s promo fee was too rich for organisers but, happily, the the fastest human in history will grace Luzhniki Stadium next August as a wild card.

FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup
When: September 18 – September 28
Beach soccer’s rocket rise in popularity is a result of FIFA’s all-powerful aegis and patronage since 2005. Paradisal Tahiti welcomes perennial favourites Brazil and fifteen other contenders over the course of eleven days in September.

Rugby League World Cup
When: October 26 – November 30
Where: England and Wales
Members of the Rugby League International Federation, from Australia and New Zealand to France and Scotland, will contribute to the United Kingdom’s Golden Decade of Sport in October and November. The final will take place at Manchester’s Theatre of Dreams, Old Trafford.

FIVB World Grand Champions Cup
When: November 12-17
Volleyball-mad Japan will, as usual, host the premier competition in the sport in the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup. Current favourites on the women’s side include the U.S.A., Brazil and host Japan, with Russia, Brazil and Italy at the top of the men’s side.
