The Evolution of Tennis Technology [Infographic]

The rules of tennis may have changed little over the years but few other sports have been as dramatically impacted by the advancement of technology as tennis. With the Australian Open coming to a close this week we thought it might be a good time to take a look at all the ways technology has impacted the game over the years.

    Did you know:

    * The game of tennis was originally played using your hand back in 1100AD and racket technology hasn’t greatly changed since the 1980’s when composite rackets were introduced.
    * Australian Samuel Groth currently has the fastest serve recorded at 263km/hr.
    * The incredible ball tracking system “Hawk-Eye” performs with an average error of 3.6mm - thats roughly equivalent to the fluff on the ball.
    * IBM’s ‘Keys to the Match’ analyzed 41 million data points covering Grand Slam matches over the past 8 years to provide detailed assessment of what each player needs to do to succeed.
    * 35km of cables are wired through Melbourne Park each year for the Australian Open.
    * 150 people work on the technology for the Australian Open tournament.
    * One consequence of improving technology is that tennis champions are becoming older (the average age of male competitors is now 26).
