Say Yes to Yallingup, Western Australia

Western Australia is a formidable challenge to undertake as a tourist and indeed, for most, the vast region equals peerless Perth. The indomitable state capital is a perennial “most livable” city, with untold culture, outdoor recreation and a desirable – if not enviable – quality of life for the 1.7 million who live there. With a gorgeous skyline, progressive civic vibe and curative warm Mediterranean climate, Perth deserves the praise and tourist throngs.

The rest of the leviathan state however, from UNESCO World Heritage Shark Bay to UNESCO World Heritage Purnululu National Park, Swan Valley to Pemberton, is truly remarkable. One handsome destination that soars head and shoulders above most is Yallingup.

Quick geography lesson: Yallingup is 266 km south of Perth and about equidistant, 35 km or so, from both Busselton and Margaret River, in the remarkble South West region of Western Australia. The tiny town has several claims to fame, from world class natural scenery to limestone caves. Check out our mini-primer for inherent points of interest in and around this picturesque holiday spot in the south-west corner of Australia.

    Ngilgi Cave

An exceptional show cave north-east of Yallingup, Ngilgi Cave is a vital part of local Aboriginal lore and is only minutes from the town proper. The caves in Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park lure countless visitors as well and near Margaret River, four others open to the public include Jewel Cave, Lake Cave, Calgardup Cave and Giants Cave.

    Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park

Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park is a gem of Western Australia but a bit of a trek from Perth. Yallingup and indeed, other parts within the Margaret River Wine Region, constitutes a pre-eminent gateway to the superlative wildlife and nature preserve. A mere 55 km away,  Yallingup offers intimate access to the National Park’s significant populations of wallabies, bandicoots, possums and grey kangaroos. Get lost amid groves of peppermint trees, rare, exotic wildflowers and one of the most spectacular cave systems in the hemisphere. It helps that hotels in Margaret River Wine Region sit on the doorstep of Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park – the supreme point of interest makes a nifty day trip from Yallingup.

    Wine Producers

One obvious and inimitable facet which separates Yallingup from the pack is the oenophile-worthy ensemble of wine producers in the area. Margaret River wine enjoys a prestigious world class reputation and vineyards galore reside near the gorgeous coastline. Surf before breakfast, sample wines after a gourmet lunch …. this is why people flock to Yallingup. Producers to include on a wine tour include Vasse Felix, Brookland Valley, MadFish and Marchand & Burch. While wine writers often draw favorable parallels between Margaret River’s climate and the terroir of Bordeaux, France, the two regions produce very different wines (not to disparage Bordeaux but we personally like what South West, Western Australia has to offer in terms of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sémillon, Shiraz and Verdelho).

    Coastline

Yallingup’s protective lagoon is the town and immediate area’s flagship feature. Achingly idyllic and with incredible surf, the coastline offers picture-postcard conditions for a wide array of pursuits. Beach accommodations in Yallingup run the gamut, from budget-concious cottages to luxurious boutique hotels and just about every iteration in between. Whatever option you choose, Yallingup and the Margaret River Wine Region is a jewel holiday destination.
