Pros and Cons of U.S.A. All-Inclusives
posted in Beaches & Islands, North America . posted by Ian on April 04, 2011 . 4 Comments
No other accommodation category sparks more debate than the all-inclusive resort. Some swear by them, others refuse to even consider one for a week-long holiday in, say, the Yucatan Peninsula or Costa del Sol. Though the pros and cons seem obvious on the surface, it helps to break down the all-inclusive landscape before we list some of our favourite package resorts in the U.S.A.

Pros
The promise of a no-hassle, research-free holiday: In other words, you can lay back, stay in one place and not worry about where to bag your next meal. Restaurant research is a source of pleasure for some and a source of untold stress for others.
One predictable price: With all-inclusives, you tend to avoid questions about the bottom-line. Unless you decide to go crazy at duty-free, your budget is set.
Meet new people: You can undoubtedly make new friends everywhere you travel but many all-inclusives have a reputation for bringing people together. And yes, we mean romantically.
Safety: If you’re an apprehensive traveller, all-inclusives do offer a relative sanctuary of sorts. This can be especially enticing in parts of the world that don’t have the best track record safety-wise.
Family-friendly: With a bunch of wee ones in tow, it’s perfectly understandable why some parents jump on the all-inclusive bandwagon. For families, the logistical ease and amenities are tough to beat.

Cons
All-inclusives are generic: The milieu, food and ambiance is generally watered-down to appeal to as broad a population as possible. Authentic cultural experiences all-inclusives are not.
Lack of access and spontaneity: In many all-inclusives, you’re stuck on the resort, without much recourse if you want to get out and explore.
Lack of intimacy: Many package resorts resemble small towns and are densely packed. Not the best option if you’re looking for a tranquil getaway.
Not necessarily cheaper: While it’s definitely easier to book an all-inclusive and relax, knowing the details are all in hand, the truth is that you can often find less expensive alternatives if you plan every step of the way yourself.
Bad for the local economy and environment: If you have a sustainable/eco frame of mind and want that to carry over in how/where you travel, do your research when you book an all-inclusive. Some have abysmal track records when it comes to best practices vis-Ã -vis the environment and local workforce.
