2013 UEFA Champions League Final
May 25, 2013
Wembley Stadium, London
The UEFA Champions League Final. Simply put, it has no rival in world club football. Or, arguably, in world sports, period. Wonks speculate that a win in the final is worth somewhere in the range of €126 million. Moreover, the cumulative television audience in the big five European markets regularly tops 45 million. The game is such a massive event now that the global television audience makes the Super Bowl look cute. 2013 will smash records too, with titans Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Real Madrid and Barcelona in the semis and the best stadium on the planet, Wembley, as host.

MLB Mets-Yankees Subway Series
May 27-30, 2013
New York City
The Big Apple is uncommonly fizzy when the local boys of summer hook up at Citi in Queens and Yankee Stadium in The Bronx. The rare clash between Major League Baseball city rivals, the Mets in the National League and the Yankees in the American League, unites New Yorkers in a particular way. Indifference is unacceptable; one has to choose a side. Hop on the subway to the 161st Street – Yankee Stadium station and the Mets – Willets Point station to find out what the hoopla is all about. Bottom line: this is the acme of America’s pastime.

FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships
July 1-7, 2013
Beach volleyball in Poland? Maybe not in January but in July the marvelous Masurian Lake District of the country swelters and provides a perfect – if not picturesque – backdrop for the double-gender biennial championship. While past hosts were tailor-made for the sport – think Los Angeles and Rio de Janeiro – the event has also been held in the likes of Stavanger, Norway and Berlin. Besides, beach volleyball is big in Poland and with the sublime city of Gdansk some 90 minutes from host village Stare Jablonki, organisers expect big attendance numbers.

EuroBasket Women 2013
June 15-30, 2013
The best female basketball players in Europe will clash for continental hoops supremacy in France this June. Observers and purists often cite the EuroBasket tournament as more competitive and bloodthirsty than the Olympics. You may want to get to Lille, a mere dribble-drive from Paris, for this one.

FIBA EuroBasket 2013
September 4-22, 2013
On the male side of the equation, the FIBA EuroBasket 2013 will descend on diminutive Slovenia in September. Capital Ljubljana shares the host role with Jesenice, Koper, and Celje. Spain is the huge favourite but the likes of Russia, France and Turkey will field decent squads as well.

2013 ICC Champions Trophy
June 6-23, 2013
London, Birmingham, Cardiff
On to the genteel game of cricket. Every other month seems to feature another major Test or One Day International but, we swear, this one in June is important for fans of the sport. The ODI tournament held in England and Wales has a vault of prize money at stake, for one, and unites the foremost octet of cricket powers: Australia, India, England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, South Africa, and the West Indies. The final will take place at Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham on June 23 but India versus Pakistan, at Edgbaston on June 15, will feel like a final.
