I've stayed at the Vanderbilt several times. Great value for the money. Nothing fancy but clean and safe.

A good compromise between a hostel dorm and a budget chain hotel. Rooms are very small (bunkbed style for most). Basin in room but shared bathrooms and showers at the end of each floor (and not all floors have private shower stalls, a bit high school gym retro). But rooms were safe, and staff always asked to see keys for each person going up in the elevator, so security was a plus. Location is away from Times Square area, but only 10 mins walk from Grand Central and 5th Avenue.

It was a great location for a cheap hotel in Manhattan. Couldn't beat it! We used the room just to sleep and shower, facilities were clean, have access to the gym. Dorm style, but didn't have to wait to use the shower or and bathroom facilities. Cleaning and fresh sheets were done daily.

I have never slept on a bed that was this bad. For 100.00 per night I would think I would have a decent matress. It was the worst experience of my life and will say and do everything possible to tell people that your hotel is the WORST I've ever been to. The room was 4' x 8" and dirty and a flle bag. It was worth about a 2.50. You are deplorable.

if you are looking for cheap dorm-room type lodging near Park Avenue, it doesn't get any better! might want to bring a reading lamp or a clip-on book light, might want to bring slippers for that long walk down the hall to the shared bathroom. might want to bring an extra blanket or very light sleeping bag to supplement the thin bed covers. might want to bring kleenex or tissues for your room. other than that, it's great! expect a dorm room, and your expectations will be met or exceeded. expect a hotel, and you will be less than satisfied.

Booked a single room for my stay. The room is ultra small. The fridge has a smell to it that I dare not use. There are only 2 bathrooms and toilets for each floor. The Wifi connection is bad that I saw many people hang around the area at the lift area just to get a better signal. Most of the staff are unfriendly. Only good thing about this hostel is the location which is near to the United Nations HQ. The metro is within walking distance but its like a 10 mins walk away.

When we checked in, there was only one front desk employee and a line of customers, so service was very slow. They seem to highly value safety - all members had to register and get their photo ID scanned. They also checked people going up the elevators to the rooms. The rooms were very small - a bunk bed, wall mounted TV, desk, and chair crammed in a tiny room. Not super comfortable, but the price was low for the hotel's proximity to the heart of NYC. Bathrooms and showers are gender-segregated and shared.

i booked the hotel for $80. i checked the hotel. my room was already alloted to someone else. i was given another room which was very dirty and clumsy. i was charged $120 as the person at the reception was not knowing whether payment through web has been received by the hotel or not. i have been asked to vacate the room bt 7.00 am also. very very bad experience.

I did not spend much time there. The room was small, but my purpose was to spend majority of time sightseeing in the beautiful city!

Really situated in a good location but the rooms and the bathrooms in the dormitory levels are awful. But they do know to give importance and improve their gym area which serve to their members also. Keep in mind that you can use the showers in the gym which is the best idea.

This is a regular stay for me when in New York when I know I will be spending most of my time outside of the hotel, and need a clean, safe place to stay, with WIFI and gym/pool facilities. Great value for money for a budget hotel. Staff are courteous enough. Range of ages and nationalities of guests is a plus. If you need to be in mid-town, near the U.N., the location can't be better. I put the money saved towards eating at more expensive restaurants. Check-out the room options not advertised on the internet.

The hotel is centrally located & within walking distance from Grand Central and Times Square. These alone are a huge plus to one's stay, but the price wins hands down. Good value but be prepared for very basic ammenties. Think dorm! No glitz or extras here....and noise might be a factor. If you are looking for greater comforts (aka wonderful matress/ quiet/ own bathroom) this is not the place for you.

Although I had read several negative reviews prior to my trip pertaining to rude staff at the YMCA Vanderbilt, I did not experience this during my stay and found them to be pleasant and helpful to my requests. My main issue with this facility is that the noise in the hallways from other guests shutting their doors was quite overwhelming. Some of the other inconsiderate guests do not get that the banging doors startle everyone in the rooms and they continued to do it over and over! I've experienced this even in upscale hotels so I think its an awareness that all of us have to think about when their are other people staying in rooms around us..

The Hotel, which is not a hotel after all, is well located in the Middle of Mannhatan. BUT the room I had on the 4th floor .. just in front of a garage ... was awfully noisy. all night long... because cars come in and out making terrible noise on the ramp of the garage. Otherwise, even if YWCA... it is a place people rent to stay and get some sleep. In halls ... young student sit all night on the floor and talk, laugh.... drink. I am sorry I chose this room that after all was not that cheap for what it is. The computer use was a rip off... too. very excessive. So... I will not return to this place... ever...

while the location and price were un-beatable, the room was noisy due to constant door slamming of men's room across the hall and the stairwell next door. if I stay again I will ask for room at end of hall and bring ear plugs.

Good spot if you plan to see nyc and not spend alot of time in room. Pool being renovated until January 2012. Overall, cheap and decent. Room a bit grimy but bed sheets fresh. Will stay again.

We were very please to find a clean hostel with comfy [but small] beds and a tv in the room. Located very close to 5th Ave and Central Park, it's great for a couple of days, especially if you are out and about in the city and just want a place to sleep. Worth the price and a bit more.
