Watertown Rundown ... Read more »
Watertown’s flowing Black River and its many falls make this city a great destination for travellers who live for kayaking and whitewater rafting and a host city to kayak competitions. Visitors can also get a taste of Americana in Watertown, which is known as the birthplace of the safety pin, the five-and-dime stores, Little Trees air fresheners and is home to the Jefferson County Fair, the longest continually running county fair in the United States.
Visitors to Watertown should take a stroll in Thompson Park and admire the wildlife and plants in the New York State Zoo located within the park. Don’t forget to pack a picnic basket or bring a bather, as the park offers swimming pools and picnic areas, as well as hiking trails and tennis courts. If you are interested in checking out the annual county fair, head to the Alex Duffy Fairgrounds. The popular Seaway Wine Trail Tour offers visitors a chance to take a sip at the wineries in the Watertown area. Another popular destination is the Burrville Cider Mill built in 1801, which is located at North Branch of the Sandy Creek on a 30-foot waterfall.
When To Go
Watertown has four distinct seasons, much like the rest of the northeastern United States. Each season has attractions to offer to visitors, with the winter bringing snow and skiing and the spring, summer and fall months perfect for plowing through river waters. April through August see warm days and cool nights, whilst December through March sees temperatures ranging from highs of 1°C (33°F) to lows around -12°C (11°F).
