Syracuse is a museum as much as a city in Sicily. A veritable gem, the city is laden with landmarks and architecture that together, attest to past distinction as one of the premier maritime powers in the Mediterranean. To walk the streets of the UNESCO World Heritage Site is to rub shoulders with history. Syracuse has the look and feel of antiquity, from the Roman Amphitheatre to the Temple of Zeus, Fountain of Arethesa and Tomb of Archimede. One wonders if the 120,000 residents of Syracuse realize their good fortune, to live among such peerless monuments.

Other attractions from the city's broad Byzantine and Muslim periods contribute to one of the most diverse skylines in Italy. The Archaeological Museum contains a terrific collection of artifacts that date as far back as the Bronze Age. Another fine collection in Syracuse is the impressive number of palaces in the city, from the 14th century Palazzo Mergulese-Montalto to the 18th century Palazzo Beneventano del Bosco.
