You can still visit the first four that were constructed in 1733, which are Johnson Square, Wright Square, Ellis Square and Telfair Square. Johnson Square is the city’s largest and has two fountains, a large bronze sundial and a monument in the centre. Ellis Square was formerly a marketplace and is now home to the City Market, which offers entertainment, dining and shopping options in downtown Savannah. Another notable stop is Lafayette Square, where you can visit the Hamilton-Turner House and the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. You can take a riverboat cruise down the Savannah River or a trolley tour for a unique perspective of the city. When To Go

Savannah has a climate that is subtropical and generally warm throughout most of the year. Summer can be hot, reaching 31-33°C (88-91°F) with high humidity, and are prone to thunderstorms. Spring is from March through May and is the most popular time to visit, as the weather is comfortable, flowers are in bloom and there are many events. Rainfall occurs the most from June through September, with precipitation reaching an average of 180 mm (7.1 inches) in August.

Getting There

If you are flying to Savannah, you will land at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV), which serves Delta, Delta Connection, Continental Express, United Express, US Airways, Vision Airlines and American Eagle. You will find plenty of rental car services, shuttles, taxis and other options for ground transport to get to your destination in Savannah. If you are travelling by bus, you can take the Chatham Area Transit for regional service and Greyhound for longer-distance travel. Rail service is provided by Amtrak, which has trains running between Savannah and New York City and Miami, FL. The DOT operates free shuttle busses, River Street Streetcar and a ferry. Fares are free in the Historic District.
