Subtle Sarasota-Bradenton
For a city so full of aging retirees, Sarasota-Bradenton is pretty darn happening. Located on the coast of Florida and proudly encompassing half of the best beach in the United States, it’s not hard to surround yourself with bronzed bodies and skimpy bikinis rather than walking sticks and chinos. ... Not that the oldies aren’t on to something, however – the white sands of Crescent Beach and the greenery of Myakka River State Park are each idyllic enough to have you dreaming of cashing in your own retirement fund. In the meantime, though, there’s still the bustling open-air shopping circle at St Armands – and when you’re sipping an ice-cold mojito at Bahi Hut cocktail lounge, you’ll be thankful you don’t struggle to stay up past 10 p.m.
SARASOTA-BRADENTON’S TOP 10
10. Mote Marine Aquarium This aquarium is actually a research facility that also rescues animals. |
5. Marie Selby Botanical Gardens This 8.5-acre tropical oasis is truly a feast for the senses, from the bromeliads to the coffee served in the garden cafeteria. |
9. Sarasota Jungle Gardens Kitschy and dated, yet not quite as OTT as Disneyworld, the Jungle Gardens are a good way to escape the city. |
4. Mixon Fruit Farms Lacklustre deli items are compensated for with the freshest, tastiest fruit in Florida. |
8. De Soto National Memorial If one of your party wants to go for a scenic run and another wants to try on armour, the De Soto National Memorial is your ideal destination. |
3. South Florida Museum Encompassing the Bishop Planetarium and Parker Manatee Aquarium, as well as the museum itself, this place really does offer something for everyone. |
7. Rosa Fiorelli Winery and Vineyard If you think early mornings and scorching summer heat don’t mix well with drinking a whole bunch of different wines, this vineyard will quickly change your mind. |
2. John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art The collection inside the Ringling mansion is almost as eclectic as the house itself. |
6. Robinson Nature Preserve With wide walking trails, grassy picnic spots and clean restrooms, this County-run preserve is good for mind, body and hygiene. |
1. Siesta Key Public Beach The United States’ #1 beach is a Florida paradise. Pity the parking and public restrooms don’t rate quite so highly. |
SARASOTA-BRADENTON EVENTS
Old-style entertainment and agriculture shows are the main draws of March’s Sarasota County Fair. Still going strong (and largely unchanged) since the mid-1930s.
Main Street draws a crowd to rival Siesta Key for Fiesta on Main in May, offering Mexican fashion, games and entertainment as well as a plethora of tasty tacos.
We’ve all seen houses decked out in fairy lights, so the Sarasota Christmas Boat Parade of Lights is a pretty cool change.

· The public bus service, SCAT and MCAT, and cheap and reliable enough.
· Trolley runs along the beach are frequent and free, and provide a few good photo ops even if you’re not going anywhere in particular.
